Fractions in Year 2 are mostly about understanding equal parts and finding simple fractions of shapes and numbers. Keep it visual, keep it calm, and build confidence with short sessions.
Parent note: this page focuses on the Year 2 essentials. No pressure, just steady progress.
If your child can do these three things, they are in a great place for Year 2 fractions:
Recognise halves and quarters in pictures (equal parts).
Find half of an even number (like 12, 18, 20).
Find a quarter by halving twice (for 12, 20, 24).
Fractions can feel tricky at first. This is the easiest way to explain them so children ‘get it’ quickly.
Year 2 often asks things like half of 18, a third of 12, or a quarter of 20.
Nice trick: a quarter is “half of a half”.
These are the most common Year 2 fraction skills. Each one can become its own SEO subtopic page later.
Shade halves, thirds, and quarters of rectangles, circles, and other shapes.
Two short sessions per week is plenty for fractions. Keep it visual: shapes first, then numbers.
These are the exact places children get stuck. Fixing them early makes the rest easy.
If a rectangle is split into different sized pieces, it cannot show halves or quarters correctly.
Fix: ask “are the pieces the same size?” before shading.
For 1/4 of 20, some children guess “4” because they see a 4.
Fix: always do the share step first: 20 ÷ 4.
